Ganglion cysts are lumps that usually develop on the wrists, though they can occur at any joint. These cysts are nothing more than a harmless collection of fluid, and typically do not cause pain or limited movement. Cysts that do cause pain or limited movement can be treated in several ways.
The first sign of a ganglion cyst is the presence of an unusual lump on or around a joint - usually a wrist joint. These cysts may develop very rapidly or very gradually, and may vary in size over time or even disappear. Some cysts may cause pain, tenderness, or movement and sensation difficulties depending on their location. Most cysts, however, are little more than an aesthetic issue and they may disappear spontaneously.
Ganglion cysts may develop when the lubricating fluid from inside the wrist leaks out of the capsule. These cysts tend to be more common in individuals who have sustained previous injuries or have had trouble with tendonitis. However, anyone can develop these cysts.
Once a cyst has developed, there is a chance it will go away on its own, but there is no way of knowing if or when this will happen. Individuals whose cysts do not cause pain or other symptoms often choose to do nothing about them. For those who wish to get rid of their cyst, there are a few options. The simplest treatment involves draining the cyst by puncturing it. This is done with a needle and may include injections of anti-inflammatory drugs and anesthetic. This is only a temporary solution for most patients, however. Cysts that are treated in this way are likely to reappear.
Surgical removal is another option. This provides the best chance of long term treatment. A small incision is made through which the cyst and the stalk that connects it to the joint capsule are removed. People whose cysts cause them pain or limited movement are strongly encouraged to pursue surgical removal.
