While problems with the wrists and hands such as carpal tunnel syndrome are relatively well known, other common hand problems are less discussed. Among these are Dupuytren’s contracture and ganglion cysts.
With its staff of highly qualified hand specialists, Hayes Hand Center is well equipped to help with these as well as many other hand problems. A consultation with one of our qualified surgeons will help you determine an appropriate course of treatment for your hand problems.
Also known as Dupuytren's disease, Dupuytren’s contracture is a progressive condition that usually causes the hand to curl in on itself. Cords of tissue form within the palm, and these cords eventually harden and contract, pulling the fingers down over the palm. Most often affected are the little finger and the ring finger, though occasionally the middle finger is also involved.
While generally not painful, Dupuytren's contracture can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks such as opening jars or grasping objects.
Treatment for Dupuytren's contracture includes:
Some cases of Dupuytren’s contracture are not serious enough to require aggressive treatment. A consultation at Hayes Hand Center can help determine your appropriate treatment.
Ganglion cysts are caused by a sac of thick, sticky liquid that develops on top of a tendon. They occur most frequently on the back of the hand, near the wrist area. Cysts can vary in size, and the cause is unknown but might be due to trauma or a malformation in the tissue surrounding the tendon.
Ganglion cysts can be treated by removal of the fluid inside the cyst with a needle, a procedure called aspiration. However, cysts often return after aspiration. The cysts can also be surgically removed, which makes recurrence much less likely.
